West Bengal Pradesh Congress President Adhir Chowdhury today met the agitating villagers in Shibpur near here, drawing ire from a group of people carrying Trinamool Congress (TMC) flags who shouted 'go back' at him.

"This happened when Chowdhury was returning after holding a meeting at Shibpur village," Birbhum district secretary of Congress Rathin Sen said.

"It seems they wanted to create trouble. Chowdhury did not pay any attention to them and avoided confrontation," Sen said.

The villagers had been agitating against the state government's decision to set up a township and a university on a land which was acquired for setting up an industry during the Left Front regime.

Chowdhury reached the site near Shibpur village this afternoon. Chowdhury and other Congress leaders went to the village and neighbouring villages, spoke to the villagers and held a small meeting.

Addressing the gathering, Cowdhury said, "We are not against industry. The chief minister should solve the problem."

"The villagers want industry to be set up here. They do not want a township or a university. If the government tries to do anything by force, we will stand beside the villagers," Chowdhury said.
