Taking everyone by surprise, actor Vishal, president of Tamil Nadu Producers Council and general secretary of South Indian Artistes Association, on Saturday announced that he would be contesting the December 21 RK Nagar Assembly Constituency by-poll as an independent candidate.

The actor said he took the decision after consulting with his friends and supporters on Saturday.

Sources said he will file his nomination papers to contest in the RK Nagar seat, which was held by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on Monday. "He will explain why he took the decision and also to his plan to enter politics after filing the nomination papers," the source said.

While interacting with friends and supporters, the actor told them that the time had come for him to enter politics as he could not sit and watch anymore.

"I know the risk involved . I am prepared to face it," one of his close friends quoted him as saying.

Amid talks of Tamil superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan entering politics, the actor has surprised everyone by his sudden announcement. The announcement marks the continuation of the trend of film personalities entering politics in Tamil Nadu. DMK founder CN Annadurai and his successor M Karunanidhi were successful film scriptwriters who went on to become the chief ministers, AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran and party supremo Jayalalithaa were successful film stars.

Vishal also openly took on BJP's national secretary H Raja during the controversy involving Tamil movie Mersal and he also took on the ruling AIADMK in the recent case of a Tamil producer committing suicide following harassment by a financier.

Political analyst Gnani felt that it was too early to talk about the impact of actor Vishal's entering the fray in the RK Nagar. "We don't know why he is contesting, what kind of politics is he going to pursue and who will he oppose? We can only know if there will be an impact if we had answers to these questions, " he said.
