Absconding convict in arms case arrested from Goregaon

A convict in the arms case, who was absconding for past few months, has been arrested by the Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) from suburban Goregaon, an official said today.

Acting on a specific tip-off that Akbar Idris Khan had returned home from Gulf last evening, the ATS officials arrested him from his residence in Idris Compound in Goregaon-west, said the official.

Akbar, who is involved in more than 11 serious offences including house breaking, theft, loot and robberies in Mumbai, Gujarat was convicted under the Arms Act, the official said.

He was caught with his aide Shivanand Pandey in a arms case in January 2014, he said.

In November 2016 he was released on bail and since then he was absconding, the official added.

During the investigation it was revealed that Akbar went to Hyderabad, there he changed his identity and obtained passport using forged documents and left the country, the official said.

As he did not return to jail, the court declared him proclaimed offender, he said.
