'About 30 lakh families in Andhra Pradesh affected by Hudhud'

About 30 lakh families have been affected by cyclone 'Hudhud' that battered coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, according to a report by the state government, which conducted a survey of the impact.

The families affected by the cyclone were from the districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari, the State Disaster Management Department said in a report today.

According to the report, 11,58,132 families were severely affected and 18,08,783 partially hit by the cyclone that made landfall in Visakhapatnam on October 12.

It said 90,291 houses, 27,041 electric towers/poles, 1,902 canal or tanks (breaches) have suffered damage. Also, 1,110 boats were in the category of damaged or missing.

At least 46 people were killed in rain-related incidents triggered by the cyclone and another 43 people suffered injuries, it said.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who camped in Visakhapatnam, the worst affected district, for about a week to oversee relief operations, said losses due to 'Hudhud' could go up to a staggering Rs 60,000 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Visakhapatnam, had announced an interim relief of Rs 1,000 crore to Andhra Pradesh.
