Attacking BJP Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari for insulting a woman teacher during a public event, the Aam Aadmi Paty (AAP) on Saturday termed his behaviour as “shameful and unfortunate” and urged the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) to take immediate action against him.
“In a video that went viral on social media, the BJP MP from North-East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, was seen insulting a woman teacher on stage when she requested him to sing a few lines. Is this a way to talk to a woman? This is a political event, not a joke,” said AAP’s Delhi convener Dilip Pandey.
In the video, Tiwari continued to berate the woman and even asked her to step down from the stage as she continued to smile sheepishly throughout the video. Then, he asked the officials sitting on the stage to take action against the woman.
“Tiwari was a renowned artist before becoming a Member of Parliament. He had been frequently seen exhibiting his talent on public platforms. But insulting and humiliating a woman for a genuine request is really shameful and unfortunate,” said Pandey.
Tiwari did not respond to calls, while Pandey urged the DCW to take strict action against him. “The DCW should take strict action against him so that no elected representative can ever insult a woman on a public forum,” he said. “Tiwari should publicly apologise instead of justifying his behaviour,” he added.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also took to Twitter asking why the teachers’ association was silent on the issue. “Why are BJP-affiliated teachers’ associations, teachers’ council and those custodians of patriotism silent on a teacher being insulted by their leader,” he asked on Saturday.
Sisodia also tweeted the video with a caption, “This is how the BJP Delhi chief treats a woman teacher.”
