The Delhi government and the Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday launched a joint attack on Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung accusing him of threatening to unleash the CBI on the Arvind Kejriwal-led state government and calling him a "spokesperson of the BJP".

The Delhi government had in a Friday cabinet decision advised Jung to dissolve the Shunglu committee constituted to review over 400 government files. The state cabinet had termed the committee as illegal and unconstitutional.

"It is a matter of deep regret that the Central government's appointee, LG Jung is openly threatening to unleash the Central Bureau of investigation (CBI) upon the democratically elected government of Delhi. It is a new low in the already blatant politicisation and misuse of the premier investigative agency of the country," a statement issued by the Delhi government on Saturday said.

"It also unmasks the ulterior motive behind setting up of the three member Shunglu Committee, whose formation was anyway in violation of the Constitution of India and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, Act), 1991 (GNCTD)," the statement added.

Meanwhile, the AAP also intensified its attack on LG Jung, calling him a "spokesperson of (the) BJP".

"LG Jung should stop behaving like a political spokesperson of BJP. He is hiding behind the Narendra Modi government to cover-up his unconstitutional and illegal actions," alleged AAP leader Ashutosh.

Jung had on Friday countered with an official statement asking the Delhi government why it was afraid of the truth coming out. "Some misdemeanours are of the gravity that already these matters are in the process of being referred to the CBI for investigation," he said in the statement.

Jung had formed the committee chaired by former former comptroller and auditor general VK Shunglu on August 30; former chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami and former chief vigilance commissioner Pradeep Kumar are also members.

"The AAP government is not afraid of Jung's machinery and falsehoods. We have made it clear time and again that why can't the L-G wait until the Supreme Court gives its decision. The Delhi government and the AAP will not succumb under the pressure of threat of using the CBI for political vendetta against us," Ashutosh added.
