A high drama ensued between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP lawmaker Mahesh Girri, as he sat on a hunger strike outside chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence on Sunday, demanding allegations on him regarding the murder of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) official M M Khan be proved.

Kejriwal, in a recent letter to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, had accused him of protecting Girri and NDMC vice-chairman Karan Singh Tanwar in Khan's murder.

Khan, an estate officer of NDMC, was shot dead on May 16, a day before he was scheduled to pass the final order on lease terms of a hotel which was operating out of a property leased out by the NDMC. The owner of the hotel, Ramesh Kakkar, was arrested on charges of murder.

Refuting the allegations, Girri had challenged Kejriwal for a public debate over his allegations. Girri had also written a letter to Kejriwal inviting him to Constitution Club to produce evidence against him.

After Kejriwal refused to respond to Girri, the BJP MP, reached his residence on Sunday and sat on hunger strike. Girri had challenged Kejriwal to either prove his charge against him or resign from his chief ministerial position.

"If he manages to prove, then I will quit politics, otherwise he should do so," Girri said.

On Monday, AAP leader Ashutosh slammed Girri saying said that the lawmaker must sit on hunger strike for 20 days.

"Mahesh Girri should sit on hunger strike for 20 days. Arvind (Kejriwal) sat for 15 days," Ashutosh tweeted.

"Arvind is diabetic. He sat on hunger protest twice for 15 days. Mahesh Giri should definitely sit on hunger dharna for at least three weeks," he tweeted.

AAP's Delhi unit convenor Dilip Pandey slammed Girri, stressing that an open debate with Kejriwal would not solve the problem, and that he should get ready for a free and fair probe.

Pandey added, "Those who are murder accused they don't sit on dharna but are interrogated and arrested."

The party also demanded Girri and Tanwar's arrest on Khan's murder.
