In a bid to increase its presence in Maharashtra, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided to take a plunge into the state assembly election slated for October. AAP, which has a negligible presence in the state, mulls going solo in the forthcoming assembly election as its move to join hands with Prakash Ambedkar led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi did not work.

AAP may contest at least 50 to 70 seats of the total 288 seats in Maharashtra. Mumbai has been under its radar where the party is likely to put up candidates in 10 to 12 seats including Bandra west, Dindoshi, Mumbadevi, Andheri, Versova, Colaba, Wadala, and Mahahim. AAP has formed an 11-member campaign committee whose convenor is Ranga Rachure.

AAP national spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon told DNA, "Opposition in the state has miserably failed. They have not stood up against the current BJP-Shiv Sena government and most of them are now joining the saffron alliance. There is no opposition which is integral to democracy. AAP has therefore decided to step in and occupy opposition's space.'' She observed that the opposition in complete disarray as it could not expose the BJP-Shiv Sena government's failure on practically all fronts.

AAP had contested all 48 seats in Lok Sabha election held in 2014 but did not fight assembly election held in the same year. AAP also refrained from contesting civic and local body elections so also the Lok Sabha election held in May this year.
