The Airports Authority of India Employee Union (AAIEU) wants to go on a warpath with the government and the AAI management due to their allegedly callous attitude towards its demands and Chief Labour Commissioner's (CLC) directions to resolve issues related to privatisation of the four airports.

Balraj Singh Ahlawat, general secretary of AAIEU, told dna that the government and AAI management had failed to respond to them on their demands and also not followed the CLC's order of holding a meeting with AAI employees' representatives.

"This time (March 30) when we met the CLC, we told him not to mediate between us (AAIEU and the government and AAI management) but let us (AAIEU) fight directly with the government. I told him whoever is stronger will win," said Ahlawat, who is trying to rope in anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare to organise a protest rally against the privatisation of Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur and Ahmedabad airports.

He said the last meeting with the CLC did not yield any result because the AAI management had not held meeting with union body of the AAI. The meeting between the two is now slated to be held on April 6 and April 7.

Ahlawat said the union was demanding a tripartite agreement between the government, AAI and AAIEU on the lines of the pact entered between the government, Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) and its employees in 2000 before privatisation process of the power firm was kicked off.

"That (DVB's tripartite agreement) is an ideal agreement, which mandates the private company to follow the same service and fundamental rules of the government-owned firm. It also includes 100% absorption of the DVB employees by the company taking it over," he said.

The AAIEI will be submitting a copy of the tripartite agreement in the case of the DVB to the CLC in the next meeting. Meanwhile, Ahlawat is mobilising support for a protest rally that he wants to hold to highlight the demand of the AAI employees.

"We do not trust them (the government and AAI management). At the last minute, they will say there will be only 60% absorption. I want to hold a Dharna (protest rally) to confront the government and voice our objection to the privatisation of the airports," he said.

The AAI recently initiated the process of entering into a public private partnership (PPP) with private firms by inviting request for qualification (RFQ) for four airports but had to postpone it due to HR issues raised by the AAIEU.
