End-to-end computerisation of public distribution system saw one city of Nagpur saving more than 5,000 metric tonnes of foodgrains. After the successful pilot run of the Aadhaar-Enabled Public Distribution System (AEPDS) in Nagpur, the state government is set to replicate the project in all the districts over the next three months.

The AEPDS implementation is expected to save thousands of metric tonne of foodgrains throughout the state.

With the AEPD system introduced in all the districts, ration card holders and beneficiaries of public distribution system will not have to face restrictions for buying foodgrains from particular ration shops.

In Nagpur, 98 per cent ration card holders have linked their Aadhaar details. According to an official, the linking of Aadhaar cards for the remaining 2 per cent beneficiaries will be completed in a month.

With the AEPDS, it will be on record whether any particular person has unclear finger prints.

It will also reveal whether the administration has the impressions of all the ten fingers — which is being utilised for electronically knowing your customer, or e-KYC, for any government scheme.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Girish Bapat said, "the programme has made online inspection possible — checks of stocks at PDS shops can be done without physically visiting the shop."

Bapat added that to solve biometric mismatch, the department has opened help desks at all circle offices so as to ensure that AEPDS is foolproof.

Nagpur has 665 PDS shops and three lakh ration card holders.

According to the official since the AEPDS is foolproof, it is easy to identify the beneficiary and legitimate beneficiaries will not be denied his or her rights.
