In her last month of pregnancy, Nagpur resident Prapti Banerjee (37) slowly made her way to Laxminagar Sonography Clinic in the vicinity of her house for her third Doppler test, only to face undue harassment from the staffers and the doctor there. The attendant at the reception insisted that she insert the middle name of her husband in the register, while Banerjee kept arguing that she had not changed her name after marriage.

"I made it clear in as many words that I do not use my husband's name in legal documents such as PAN card or Aadhaar card, and if the entry were to be made as such it would erroneous," Prapti told DNA on Thursday. "The attendant did not enter my name, and instead wrote 'Prapti Rajiv Ranjan Singh', which is not my identity," she added.

Dr Rashmi Shende, a radiologist and the owner of the clinic, said, "We insisted on the middle name, but after a lot of argument with the patient, we changed the name to 'Prapti Rajiv Ranjan Banerjee Singh'. We are supposed to maintain compliance with state laws."

This irked Banerjee even more. "They have totally convoluted my identity. No person with such a name exists," she said.

Under the record-keeping laws of Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostics Technique (PCPNDT) Act, radiologists are supposed to maintain a five-column register under Section 91/C, which requires the following heads to be filled in: patient's name, name of father or spouse, number of children and the date of the first report. "The name of the father or spouse has to be filled in separately, not as a middle name of the patient," clarified Dr Aniruddh Kulkarni, Maharashtra Secretary, Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA). "Dr Shende has got the record-keeping rules wrong. The patient should not have been unduly harassed."
