When Shoaib Aijaz Guru uploaded his songs on YouTube, little did people realise that the 18-year-old rapper is the nephew of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Shoaib loves Shah Rukh Khan and aspires to become a Bollywood singer, but fears that the political atmosphere in the country may not allow him to live his dreams. From rap to pop, he can hop across genres with ease and even pens his own compositions.

Hailing from Baramulla, Shoaib, who recently passed his class XII exams with flying colours, wants to carve his own identity. And despite no facilities being available, he has already created a niche in the cyber world with his rap and western looks.

“I wanted to be a professional rapper. But I don’t think I have the capability needed for it. I have no training. I have no studio. I record on my laptop and then upload it on the Net. Cricket and music are my life,” Shoaib told DNA.

The son of a contractor, who is the elder brother of Afzal Guru, Shoaib has been interested in singing since his schooldays. In fact, his school was the first venue where he showcased his talent as a rapper. “I used to rap in school concerts.  My principal encouraged me a lot and I started writing as well. Later, I participated in a reality show, Kashmir’s Got Talent, where I was a finalist,” he said.

Two years ago, Shoaib participated in another reality show, Chhoona Hai Asmaan, where he emerged as the winner in Baramulla district. But like most other Kashmiri teenagers, Shoaib did not tell his family about participating in the reality show.

“My father did not know about it. If I would have told him, he would not have allowed me to participate. I did not participate in the state-level competition. I have sung many songs, including some for the Kashmir cause,” he said.

Inspired by MC Kash, a rapper from Kashmir, Shoaib wears many different hats and wants to pursue a career in singing. A stunt biker, singer, cricketer and writer, the teenagers accomplishments range across varied fields.

Shoaib also dreams of working with Punjabi rappers Bohemia and Yo Yo Honey Singh, and thus intends to receive formal music training. “I do not have formal training in singing. But I was thinking about enrolling myself into coaching classes for music,” he said.

Talent notwithstanding, Shoaib is not sure about whether his family will approve of his aspirations.  “I have never asked my family. I have never asked papa. I want to convince my parents. My cousin Ghalib (Afzal Guru’s son) also eggs me on. He sometimes tells me that I am a good rapper and that I should sing for Kashmir. He is beloved friend,” Shoaib said.
