The Bhartiya Janata Party on Tuesday attacked Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi over his comment on dynasty while addressing students at the University of California, and called him a failed leader.

Hitting back at those who have accused him of reaping the benefits of 'dynasty politics', Rahul said that the entire nation is running on it and hence, one should not go only after him.

"Most of the country runs like this. Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast. Stalin is a dynast. Dhumal's son a dynast. Even Abhishek Bachchan is a dynast. Also Ambani. That's how India runs. Don't go after me," he said responding to a question.

However, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani slammed his defense citing background of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.

Speaking about Rahul's admission that arrogance was creeping in Congress in 2012, Irani said, "It must be the first incident in Indian politics where the Congress Vice President made a remark on Congress President at international level. Probably, he forgot that the Congress command was in the hands of her mother Sonia Gandhi."

"Making remark that in Sonia Gandhi's leadership congress became arrogance and hence lost the election is a big political confession," Irani added.

When Rahul said that - That's how India runs - he forgot that in independent India there are many people who are giving contribution but have no political legacy. "Prime Minister comes from a small village, President is from a family that comes from the marginalised community. Vice President is a farmer's son. The three people being at the top post is a signal that in a living democracy merit is important. A failed dynast talked about his failed political journeys in US," Irani said in a scathing attack.

Rahul Gandhi also criticised Narendra Modi's economic policies, accusing him of causing 'tremendous damage' to India's economy with 'reckless and dangerous' decisions like demonetisation and 'hastily-applied' GST.

apparently referring to rights activist and journalist Gauri Lankesh's killing, he said "The politics of polarisation has raised its ugly head in India," he said, adding that liberal journalists are being shot.

"People being lynched because they are Dalit. Muslims were killed on suspicion of eating beef. This is new in India and damages India very badly, he said"

Gandhi also said the politics of hate divided and polarised India and was making millions of people feel that they have no future in their own country.
