A day after violence suddenly spiraled out of control for hours in the communally-sensitive Chandan Nagar area, the administration took no chance with security on Wednesday even though the strictness caused hardship to citizens wanting to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with traditional gusto.
However, tension shifted from Chandan Nagar to the MY hospital where one of the injured is struggling for life amid rumours and surrounded by an agitated crowd.
Waseem, who was injured in a gun shot on Tuesday, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. As rumours spread about his condition, a large number of residents thronged the hospital.
Police officers including SP also visited the MY hospital to ensure peace in case of any eventuality. A posse of policemen is camping in the premise to deal with the possible flare up there.
Unconfirmed reports say the injured youth has died but officials are apparently afraid of confirming it, presumably to prevent fresh flare up. All that the police officers are admitting is that the youth's pulse has gone dangerously low.
Conscious of the impact of communal flare up on the forthcoming state assembly election, IGP Vipin Maheshwari and Commissioner Sanjay Dubey took it upon themselves to ensure peace in the trouble-torn area.
There was no relaxation in curfew and search to nab miscreants continued.
However, the search yielded nothing incriminatory, except stored stones in a few houses.
The police have arrested 100 persons in connection with the rioting. Condition of one of the injured, who is admitted in the MY hospital, continues to be critical.
The massive security parade in the curfew-hit area helped the administration restore people's confidence. However, the IGP Maheshwari indicated that curfew would be lifted only when the police were satisfied of normalcy in the region.
Following the violence yesterday, in which 50 people including 20 policemen were injured after two groups indulged in stone-throwing, curfew was clamped.
No untoward incident was reported from Chandan Nagar after curfew was imposed, SP Khushwaha said, adding that heavy police force has been deployed in the area.
