Kerala is all set for its first ever green school that will not only generate its own solar power but also carry out rainwater harvesting and waste management planning. Left Democratic Front (LDF) MLA Pradeep Kumar, after his successful application of putting up a state-of-the-art government school in his Kozhikode North constituency, took up the initiative of building 10 such schools.

The school, Government Higher Secondary School, Karaparamba, spread over a two-and-a-half acre and built with an expense of Rs 12 crore, will have the first-ever green campus in the state.

The school was made under PRISM project (Promoting Regional Schools to International Standard through Multiple interventions). “We won the first prize for infrastructure for four years. Later, we decided to build 10 similar schools in my constituency. The campus at Karaparamba used to be an ordinary government school, which we decided to convert into a Centre of Excellence. Solar panels were installed on the roof which can generate 30 KW electricity every day. We have made provisions to collect all the rainwater in a tank of 50,000 litres. There is a comprehensive waste-management plan to obtain biogas from the waste generated,” Kumar told DNA.

The Malayalam-medium school will provide free education and food to nearly 2,500 students. It will teach students from classes from V to XII. The teachers will communicate in English. A provision of training the students in various sports will also be available. Astroturf, basketball and hockey courts will be made for the students.

Kumar said the building and other infrastructure were built with the MP’s fund. The other donations but once the academic session began the school would have to generate its fund to meet the recurring expenses.

“Maintaining such a school will involve a lot of expenses every month. Thus, we decided to let out the auditoriums and indoor gymnasium on various occasions such as fairs, exhibitions, meetings and conferences other than what the government will allow. Thus, a corpus fund would be created for its maintenance,” he said.
