A busy day for Modi at G-20 summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a series of bilateral meetings with world leader on the sidelines of G20 meeting at the German city of Hamburg. While United States President Donald Trump walked up to him for 'an impromptu interaction', Modi during his interaction with his British counterpart Theresa May sought to bring back economic offenders from her country, an obvious reference to fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya.

The liquor baron has been in the UK since 2016, escaping arrest warrants against him. An UK court is also hearing a case regarding his return to India. Mallya is wanted in India for Kingfisher Airlines' default on loans worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore.

During his interaction with President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in, Modi expressed commitment to further develop the special strategic partnership between the two countries. The two leaders agreed to work through programmes like Make in India, Digital India, and Startup India.

He also held bilateral discussions with his Italy counterpart Paolo Gentolini which focussed on promoting bilateral relations. An official release said the two leaders stressed the significance of promoting interaction between medium enterprises of the two countries for strengthening bilateral economic cooperation. The Italan PM appreciated Indian investments in his country. The two leaders also discussed ways and means to work together for providing sustainable solutions to prevent climate change and promote development in Africa.

Modi also discussed bilateral matters with his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg. The two leaders agreed to strengthen economic relations while Solberg presented Modi with a football representing 'Sustainable Development Goals'.

Modi also had brief chats with various leaders at the Summit, including with IMF chief Christine Lagarde and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Meanwhile, the G20 leaders deliberated upon partnership with Africa and matters related to migration and health.

During the session 2 of the G-20 Summit on Sustainable Development, Climate and Energy, PM Modi was the lead speaker, where he mainly spoke about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also spoke about India's initiatives for SDGs through a consistent roadmap. He emphasised on the need for cooperation in a world of opposing realities. He also spoke about tech facilitation, ODA commitments, infrastructure, labour mobility, and health. Stressing on the need to be forthcoming on climate change action, Modi said that developing countries must have enough room to grow.

He also proposed an international coalition of countries that can identify technology, develop systems, and build capacities, adding that India is ready to lead.
