This is because of the unprecedented rise in students scoring 95 % or more marks in Class XII this year. With the number of seats not being increased from last year, cut-offs are going to go up further and set an all time record.
Delhi University has 77 colleges affiliated to it. The University, where students come from all over India and even from abroad, has 54,000 seats for the Four year Under Graduate Program (FYUP). Past trends show the number of applicants for the program at DU anywhere in the range of three to four lakh.
Senior educators from Delhi colleges believe that cutoffs for popular science courses could increase by 3-5 %, while another 1.5-3 % rise in humanities and commerce courses are expected this year.
A study of five best colleges as per stream (arts, commerce-including economics and statistics-and science pegs the number of seats available at 2,277 (Arts), 1,522 (Commerce) and 2,080 (Science). Thus the total number of seats in these five top colleges adds up to 5,879.
In the Class XII CBSE results declared on Thursday last week, the number of students who scored 95 % and above is 8,971, up by nearly 3,000. Delhi alone has 2,432 students who have scored above 95 %.
In the earlier sessions, almost half the number of students at DU's three most sought-after colleges - Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hansraj College and Hindu College – students from towns and cities all over the country had applied and got admission.
For example in 2011, at Hansraj College, more than 300 students out of the total 568 students admitted to the humanities stream and 339 students out of the total 653 students in science stream, were not from Delhi.
Of the 6,539 students who have scored above 95 % from rest of India, even if 50 % of the students, looking at past trends, apply for DU then no one below 95 % will get admission in the top five colleges.
While 22.5 % of the total seats are reserved for SCs/STs, 27 % of total intake in each course is reserved for the candidates belonging to Other Backward Castes. Also 3 % of total intake is reserved for persons with not less than 40 % disability (PWD).
Considering all the above mentioned factors will Neha Gupta (16), daughter of a truck driver get to study in one of the top colleges in Delhi University? Her father is a truck driver, her mother is a homemaker who takes care of her six siblings but that didn't stop Neha to get a 94.2 % in her Boards. Her wish is to study commerce at SRCC.
The number of 90 % and above scorers in India reached an all-time high of 59,591, up by nearly 15,000 from the previous year. Delhi has 12,778 students with scores of above 90 %.
