In another shocking and gruesome incident of rape in West Bengal, a 8-year-old was allegedly raped and then killed and her body hung from a neem tree in Kalibazar village of East Midnapore district on Thursday.
The girl went missing since Wednesday evening after she went out to get some muri (puffed rice). The family and locals then went out searching for the girl, who was initially though to have drowned slipping into a nearby pond. Then on Thursday morning, her body was seen hanging from a tree 200 metres away from her house.
"The body of the girl was found on the ground by the police. However, the locals alleged that she was found hanging from a tree and had been brought down by them," said district superintendent of police Sukesh Jain. Enraged, the villagers raided the house of Ratan, and set his house on fire.
Ratan is believed to be a occultist or a tantrik with past record of sexually assaulting minor girls.
Ratan, along with his two accomplishes were then caught when they were trying to flee away and were severely thrashed.
The beating stopped after the police intervened but Ratan, in his mid-40s, succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital, while the other two have been admitted to a hospital. The body of the girl has been sent for post-mortem, the SP said.
