Ahead of Republic Day, militants upped the ante and lobbed a powerful grenade at the Tehsil Office in Pulwama, injuring eight cops — two of them seriously. Several cars were also damaged in the explosion.

The police said that the target was the Indian Reserve Police (IRP) company guarding the Treasury in the Tehsil office, adding that the militants surfaced in the area in the afternoon and lobbed the grenade. "There is a company headquarter of IRP in the Tehsil Office premises, guarding the treasury. The grenade exploded, causing injuries to eight policemen. Six of them were discharged, and two were shifted to the Base hospital in Srinagar," said Mohammad Aslam, senior superintendent of police, Pulwama.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the area to hunt for the militants. Reinforcements were also rushed to the area to augment the security forces on the ground. However, the militants managed to escape from the scene.

The incident comes four days after the Indian Army killed five Jaish-e-Mohommad fidayeens who used the river route to cross Jhelum in the potable inflatable boats to infiltrate into Kashmir from the Uri sector along the LoC in Kashmir's Baramulla.
