Eight people, including a minor, were killed and 30 others were injured after a speeding private bus rammed into a truck on the Yamuna Expressway in the wee hours of Friday.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath condoled the deaths and asked the administration to provide necessary help to assist the victims. Prima facie, it appears that the bus was being driven at a high speed and rammed into the truck. The impact of the accident was such that the front part of the bus was completely damaged.

According to police an alert about the accident was received by the Rabupura police at around 5 am. Since the accident occurred early in the morning, most of the passengers were asleep and woke up due to the impact. The bus, belonging to Bhagwati Travels, was en route to Delhi from Jalaun.

The deceased have been identified as bus driver Mahesh Kumar (48), bus helper Bandu (25), Asad (12), Vinita (32), Arun (42), Suman (35), Vishwanath (75) and Anand (32). Apart from this, 30 others, including two minors, have been injured, with around seven of them being in a critical condition.

Some of the upper seats in the sleeper bus fell down on the passengers below. The bus had crossed the Jewar toll and had been on the road for 11 kilometres before the accident.

Investigating officials stated that it appears that the bus was being driven at a high speed and the truck was moving at a relatively slower pace in the middle lane. The bus driver could have dozed off or might have been trying to overtake the truck when he lost control.

"Based on the complaint of a passenger a case under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 304A of the IPC has been registered against the truck driver," said SK Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) Rabupura.
