Eight people were today injured, after a steel girder of an under-construction foot overbridge (FOB) fell at the Mohan Nagar metro station site even as metro services at three stations were suspended for over an hour due to a fire in east Delhi's Mansarovar Park.

In the first incident, the DMRC removed a project in-charge of the main contractor and terminated a sub-contractor's services. It also suspended its assistant engineer and junior engineer who were in-charge of the site. The incident took place around 10 am when the steel girder, which was erected for the construction of FOB, fell on passing vehicles at the under-construction Mohan Nagar Metro station in Ghaziabad. Police said that the condition of Seema (27) and Atul Gaur (30) was "serious" and they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mohan Nagar hospital. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DCP) Rakesh Mishra said the steel girder fell on a passing autorickshaw in which three passengers, Seema, Gaur and Raje, were travelling. The auto driver, Inderjeet, also sustained injuries.
A bike rider, identified as Gulzar (40), also came in contact with the falling girder.

The DMRC announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs one lakh for those with minor injuries. Mishra said an FIR was lodged against Rohit, the sub-contractor's project manager, under Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (whoever commits mischief and thereby causes loss or damage to the amount of Rs 50 or upwards) of the IPC. Mishra said that three other people, Aneesh, Fatima and Mursida, who were travelling in a car, sustained minor injures, but they did not complain to the police and continued with their journey after getting first-aid.

The DCP said that the three along with Wahid, who was driving the car, were travelling from Meerut to see a relative who is admitted in a hospital in Delhi. After the incident, the chief project manager and general manager of safety operations rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. In another incident, the DMRC suspended metro services for over an hour between Dilshad Garden and Mansarovar Park stations as a precautionary measure when a fire broke out in nearby slums.

According to the DMRC, at 1:15 pm heavy smoke was reported to be billowing out of the slums beneath the viaduct between Mansarovar Park and Shahdara (Line-1) Metro stations.  "As a precautionary measure, the train services were suspended between three stations between Dilshad Garden and Mansarovar Park Metro stations during this period. The rest of the line remained unaffected," the DMRC said in a statement. It also stated that normal services were resumed at 2.33 pm after due clearances.

The fire had broken out in the slums in Mansarovar Park area of Shahdara. According to the Delhi Fire Services, a call was received at 1 pm about the blaze and 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
