In a survey conducted by a private data analytics, 79 per cent of the respondents have said that the craze of the "big fat Indian weddings" is inspired by celebrities.

Controlling the expenses in wedding is something that was recently brought up in Lok Sabha, in the Winter session of Parliament when a Member of Parliament introduced a private member's bill seeking, "prevention and prohibition on the extravagant expenses incurred on marriages".

Chrome Data Analytics and Media, a private agency, conducted a research to understand public perception on the matter. The survey was aimed at understanding whether public should be allowed to decide the wedding budget or should it be curbed by authorities, if wedding expenditure is influenced by societal pressure, and the factors which effect the extravaganza etc.

The survey was conducted in six metropolitan cities across the nation in an age group of 25-55 years. It constituted 52 per cent women and 48 per cent men.

While the highest number of the respondents -- 79 per cent -- felt that people spend huge amount of money on weddings inspired by celebrity weddings, 73 per cent said that it is indeed not wise to spend so much money. However, 69 per cent of the respondents said that it is an expression of social standing and wealth.

A good number of them -- 62 per cent felt that it is the social pressure that makes people spend on weddings and they would rather use the money to invest in their future, like buying a house or a vehicle etc.

The big fat Indian wedding was recently trending all over social media when cricketer Virat Kohli married Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. Everything from their wedding planners to their costume designers was discussed in detail on various social media platforms.
