Landslides triggered by heavy rains blocked the vehicular movement in Raigad’s Mahad area along the Mumbai-Goa Highway on Thursday. The landslide occurred around 5am in the morning.

Massive traffic jam was reported as vehicular movement came to standstill after a landslide. According to Mahad Police, the traffic jam on the busy highway was almost 7 to 8 km long.

Official from the Mahad police station said the incident took place near Kemburli village around 5 am when a hillock along the highway fell following heavy rains on Wednesday night.

"Around 5 am, a big part of hillock and soil gave in and blocked both side of road. Traffic came to standstill immediately, said the police official.

However, the restoration work was started immediately. “We have already cleared one lane for passing vehicles from both sides," said the official. He added that works of clearing the entire road is going on.

According to official, the debris will be cleared by afternoon. However, it will take time to bring vehicular movement normal. We will ensure that roads are cleaned for smooth flow of traffic by afternoon and we have already using multiple excavator and earth movers," added the official.

Maharashtra and coastal Gujarat have witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea off north Gujarat coast and another cyclonic circulation over east central Arabian Sea off south Maharashtra coast.

Heavy rains had lashed Mumbai and Thane district over the last weekend and continued on Monday. The downpour had led to water-logging at several places and slowing the movement of suburban trains. In Mumbai, a huge part of a compound caved-in at Antop Hill area in Wadala. Around 15 cars were damaged with some vehicles getting buried under the debris, an official of the BMC's disaster management cell said.
