7 killed, over 200 injured in North-East earthquake

A powerful earthquake of 6.7 magnitude struck Manipur around 4.35am on Monday, killing at least seven in India and four in Bangladesh and injuring over 200.

Tremors were felt across east India – from West Bengal up to Odisha. According to India Meteorological Department and the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was Tamenglong district, 29 km west of Imphal.

While there were no casualties reported from the epicentre, Imphal and Dhaka bore the maximum brunt of the strong shocks, leading to building collapses and panic.

Monday's earthquake was one of the strongest in the north-east region in recent history, but lesser than the one with a magnitude of 6.9 that had rocked Sikkim in September 2011, killing 111. The Manipur earthquake occurred in the Indo-Burmese Arc, as a result of a collision between the India and the Eurasian plate.
