A 68-year-old woman in Delhi on Friday became the second person to die of novel coronavirus, the government officials said.

The woman had been earlier tested positive for coronavirus infection.

Earlier, a 76-year-old man who passed away on Tuesday in Karnataka's Kalaburagi tested positive for the virus infection. The man had returned to Karnataka from Saudi Arabia about 10 days ago.

In the case of the woman, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said the death was caused due to co-morbidity (diabetes and hypertension), adding she had tested positive for COVID-19.

A Janakpuri resident, the woman was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where she passed away on Friday.

The ministry said the woman was the mother of a person with the confirmed case of COVID-19.

Her son who had travel history to Switzerland and Italy between February 5-22 is tested positive for coronavirus.

"He initially was asymptomatic, but developed fever and cough after 1 day and reported to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on March 7, 2020. As per protocol, the family was screened and since he and his mother had fever and cough, both were admitted," the ministry said in a press statement.

"She was a known case of diabetes and hypertension. Her sample was collected on March 8, 2020. Her condition worsened on March 9 with the development of pneumonia and she was shifted to the intensive care unit. Her sample also tested positive for COVID19. Since March 9, she was having respiratory fluctuations and was provided ventilator support," it said.

However, due to comorbid conditions, she died on March 13, 2020 at RML Hospital, Delhi as confirmed by the treating Physician and Medical Superintendent, the ministry said.

All the precautionary measures as per protocol including screening, quarantine of the contacts is already taken up by the Ministry of Health, Government of Delhi and status is being monitored, it added.

Earlier, the Delhi government ordered all schools and colleges in the capital to close while banning large gatherings, including in movie theatres.

Addressing a one-day special session of the Delhi Assembly on Friday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government had been taking every step to check the spread of the pandemic.

Urging people to not hoard sanitisers and masks, Kejriwal said that the novel coronavirus outbreak was at the "containment stage", adding that the Centre and the Delhi government had been working together to deal with it.

"We have closed schools, cinema halls, universities... To contain the spread of coronavirus," Kejriwal told the Assembly. "We have been taking all precautionary measures and people have been supporting us."

"It is good that coronavirus is at the containment stage. The Centre and the Delhi government are working together to deal with it," he said.

Kejriwal underscored that precautionary measures, especially regular washing of hands, could help deal with the deadly disease.

Health Minister Satyendar Jain said more than 500 beds had been readied for COVID-19 cases. Private hospitals should be allowed to run testing laboratories, he added.
