A 64-year-old man has been arrested by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 76 lakh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here, an official statement said.

The accused, who was intercepted when he arrived from Dubai yesterday, had concealed the gold in the transformer and a motor of water heater and meat mincer.

"On a detailed examination of his checked-in baggage and a personal search, 89 pieces of gold strips weighing 2,652 gram (2.65 kg) at the market value of Rs 75.81 lakh were recovered," a press release issued today by the customs said.

The gold was made to look like the core plates of the gadgets, the release said.

The passenger was arrested and the gold seized, it said.
