Six policemen were killed on Friday evening as terrorists attacked a police contingent in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. Among those killed was the Station House Officer (SHO) of Achabal police station. The terrorists also disfigured the policemen's faces.

The vehicle in which the policemen were travelling was ambushed by the heavily armed terrorists near the Tajwara area. The group of terrorists lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately at the vehicle from all sides and later made off with the policemen's weapons.

Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation, has claimed responsibility for the attack. Abdullah Ghaznavi, Lashkar spokesperson, issued a statement to a local news agency, claiming responsibility.

The SHO was identified as Sub-Inspector Feroz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Pulwama. Four constables and one Special Police Officer (SPO) were killed in the attack.

Dr Shesh Paul Vaid, Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, told DNA that Dar was a young and an energetic officer. "Six people have been killed. We do not have so many bullet-proof vehicles," he said.

Sources say that the attack could be a retaliation to an encounter that took place early on Friday at Kulgam, where Lashkar's commander Junaid Matoo is believed to have been killed. "It seems to be a revenge attack. After surrounding their vehicle, the terrorists fired indiscriminately. Later, they snatched their weapons," an officer said.

Police have vowed to avenge the killing of six cops by neutralising all terrorists involved in the attack. "Six policemen including an SHO Feroz Ahmad martyred in Anantnag terror attack. Promise you Feroz, we'll wipe out the whole killer terror gang," (sic) tweeted Imtiyaz Hussain, Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla.

This is the third attack on policemen in the last 24 hours. Three cops were killed and another injured in two different attacks in Srinagar and Kulgam districts on Thursday. Terrorists attacked a police patrol at posh Hyderpora in Srinagar's outskirts, killing one cop and injuring another on Thursday evening. Earlier, unknown terrorists had shot dead a police constable when he was working in his fields at Bogund village in south Kashmir district of Kulgam.
