50 stray dogs burnt alive in village near Chennai

Goatkeepers Muthu and Murugadoss, burnt 50 stray dogs at Keezhampur village in Kancheepuram on Sunday. They were avenging mauling of their goats by these stray dogs.

Charred carcasses of these stray dogs were found on an agricultural land spreading the stench across the village, reports The New Indian Express.

"The brothers poisoned close to 70 dogs, out of which 50 were burnt alive using kerosene," said P Ashwath, an animal activist from Chennai who answered a distress call from the residents of the village, reports the daily.

Ashwath said that he visited the village four days after the incident but the carcasses were still lying there infecting the air with stench. He told the daily that several crows, birds, and cats too have died of feeding on those carcasses. So with the help of his friends and fellow activists, he put the charred bodies into gunny bags to put a stop on infections. They later exhumed it using palm and coconut leaves to evaporate the smell.

"Overnight a village that had close to 100 dogs, suddenly had 15," said P Ashwath.

Official at the Melmaruvathur police station said that and FIR has been launched under IPC Section 429 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, reports the daily.
