Home Minister Rajanth Singh announced several measures under consideration to bolster the capabilities of the force along the Indo-Tibetan border while addressing personeel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). Fifty new border outposts for the ITBP that will maintain temperature at a comfortable 20 degrees even in the harsh cold, helicopters for high altitude areas are among the major initiatives to strengthen the force against the Chinese.

Construction of 25 border roads in Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh is also a top priority.

The Home Minister also lauded ITBP for teaching its officials Mandarin in the wake of recent face-offs with the Chinese troops.

Setting up more posts to maintain a comfortable temperature even in the harsh cold is aimed at ensuring that the soldiers are not abandoned during extreme weather conditions.

Recent incursions by Chinese troops and the two month long stand-off in Doklam near Sikkim between the Indian Army and People's Liberation Army (PLA) prompted the government to take steps to boost infrastructure in the border areas and ensure swift troop mobilisation.

The government is also considering special lightweight winter clothing for troops deployed at the height of 9,000 feet and above and an enhanced fleet of snow scooters to patrol the high-altitude areas of the 3,488-km Indo-Chinese frontier.

Singh said 35 old border posts are being upgraded as composite units. "We are working to enhance road, mobile and satellite connectivity in the border areas for the ITBP," he said.

The minister asked ITBP troops to ensure and build good relations with border dwellers as they are the 'strategic assets' of the country and important stakeholders in keeping the borders safe.

The ITBP also showcased its maiden mechanised column of power vehicles and machines, along with its PARA commandos, aimed at speedy mobilisation of troops along the Sino-India border.

The mountain warfare-trained force unveiled a fleet of its newly-acquired military trucks, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snow scooters, bikes, mobile communication wing, excavators and a few other medium-lift four-wheeled vehicles during its 56th Raising Day celebrations at its base here.
