An 18-year-old boy was shot dead at Sonepat village on Thursday afternoon by the attackers who had killed his elder brother 5 months ago. He was waiting for his sister at the playground of her school when four men opened fire at him.

The victim, identified as Rajesh Singh of Madina village, was killed while he was waiting for his sister to return after writing her Class 10 board exam. Rajesh along with his friend was waiting at the playground of Government Senior Secondary School for girls when four men came in a white car and opened fire at him. He was shot 10 times and died on the spot whereas his friend was shot in his stomach and suffered serious injuries.

Policeman deployed at the school for the board duty, Sub-inspector Subhash Chander, heard the gunfire and rushed to the playground only to find Rajesh dead and his friend injured. He also saw the attackers flee away in the white car. Chander could not stop the assailants however he immediately rushed to a hospital where Rajesh’s friend Saavan Kumar was later stated to be stable.

Two attackers out of the four were identified as Seeta and Pawan of Madina village by the villagers. Seeta and Pawan were booked in October last year for allegedly murdering Rajesh’s elder brother Rakesh. Villagers reported that the two assailants had killed Rakesh over an old rivalry.

“Rajesh was a witness in his elder brother’s murder case. We had arrested eight out of 11 accused. But Seeta and Pawan were absconding,” said inspector Veer Bhan of the Barauda police station.

Rajesh’s father Jai Singh said: “After my elder son was killed, we had informed police several times about Seeta and Pawan. But they took no action. Now, they have killed my younger son too.”

Furious family members of Rajesh took his body and blocked the Rohtak-Panipat national highway on Thursday evening. Police resorted to lathi charge to open the highway after the family members and the villagers refused to relent.

Police also booked Rajesh’s father and 25 other villagers on charges of blocking highway and attempt to murder, claiming the family members and villagers tried to attack cops with intention to kill during their protest. Rajesh’s father along with fourteen family members were arrested and later were released on bail after they agreed to cremate his body on Friday.
