Five persons, including a couple, have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for burning to death a teenaged boy over an extra-marital affair in 2009.

Fifth Additional Sessions Judge Srinivasan in his order said the prosecution through cogent presentation of witness and materials proved the case against the accused -- a construction worker, his wife and three of their relatives. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 7,500 on each of them.

According to the prosecution, 19-year old Kumar had an illicit relationship with the wife of the construction worker. When he questioned her, the woman blamed Kumar for the affair.

The man decided to murder Kumar and told his wife to ask him to meet her. When the boy came, the woman took him in an autoricksaw and was joined by three other accused on the way. They took Kumar to a secluded place at Siruthur Tank near Oomachikulam in Madurai and set him ablaze after dousing him with petrol on September 28, 2009.

Police, which filed a man missing case on a complaint from Kumar's father, found the half-burnt body in the tank and following investigations arrested the five persons.
