4 boys arrested for Muzaffarpur gangrape

A day after a video clip of a minor girl's gang rape in Muzaffarpur while she was on her way home from the Dussehra fair went viral on social media, the Bihar police on Tuesday arrested the four accused of raping and filming the teenager.

Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Kumar confirmed the arrests and said the youth were nabbed from separate locations in their native Nawada village and are now being interrogated. The incident took place late on Saturday evening when the 14-year-old girl was heading home and the four boys, identified as Gagan, Sachin, Roshan and Anish, allegedly raped her, videographed the act and uploaded it on different internet sites.

The matter, though, came to light only after a few days, as the local Panchayat first tried bury the incident. "The girl's family and the accused youths were called for a meeting to settle on some compromise, but we got a whiff of it and acted immediately," a local police source said and added, "An FIR was lodged against seven persons — the four culprits plus three others who tried to hush it up." Reports of locals trying to hush up the incident triggered a statewide uproar with the Opposition attacking the ruling BJP-JD (U) combine over increase in cases of violence against women.

The case surfaced after it emerged that the Panchayat had attempted to hush up the gangrape of thje 14-year-old when she was on her way home from the Dussehra fair. They videographed the incident and uploaded it.
