39 dead as West Bengal reels under flood fury; at least 21 killed in Manipur landslide

In the aftermath of Cyclone Komen as many as 12 districts were affected with official figures putting the death toll at 39. The heavy rainfall left 1,19,000 people homeless in over 900 relief camps. As many as 1,80,000 houses were damaged, with more houses across the city and in other parts of the state collapsing. 

Since making landfall in Bangladesh on Thursday, Cyclone ​Komen has been bringing heavy to very heavy showers in Kolkata from Friday night. In a span of just 24 hours, the city received 133.6 mm of rainfall. Komen has weakened into a depression and is presently situated over Kolkata. 

According to the Met office, the deep depression formation is fast moving towards Jharkhand and Odisha and holds enough strength to bring widespread, heavy showers in the entire state of West Bengal including Kolkata, over the next 24 hours. 

The Indian army has been called in to tackle flood situation in Burdwan. 

An alert has been sounded in Birbhum district as heavy showers would lead to Damodar Valley Corporation barrage releasing water in the district. Villagers have been asked to stay away from low-lying areas

MP of Bishnupur, Soumitra Khan, had to swim through the flood hit parts of Bankura to distribute relief items among the villagers. 

Vast areas and arterial roads of north and south Kolkata— that include places such as Amherst Street, Thanthania, Girish Park, Manicktala, Golf Green, Jadavpur, and Tollygunge, still remain waterlogged.  The water level in some areas was more than knee-deep. Major arterial remained waterlogged and traffic movement was reduced to a grinding halt. 

On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited Udaynarayanpur in Howrah district to take stock of the situation and monitor relief and rescue operations. 

Meanwhile, persistent rainfall over the past few days caused a massive landslide in Manipur's Chandel district on Saturday, killing at least 21 people. As per reports, the landslide led to the collapse of almost all houses in the Zoumul village under Khengjoi sub-division.

Responding to the situation, the state Irrigation and Flood Control Department has reportedly opened one control room with the number 0385-2451550 in Imphal. Centre directed NDRF to move forces to Manipur for rescue and relief operations in the landslide-affected areas.
