35 families marooned in Darjeeling due to heavy rains

A total of 35 families are marooned at Poshyer under Kalimpong sub-division of Darjeeling following incessant rains which raised the possibility of landslides.

The affected families said they were camping along the 2nd Mile road under plastic and tarpaulin covers as the cracks in boulders widened raising possibilities of the rocks tumbling down.

Villager Kamala Chettri said she and her family left their house and livestock to save themselves and have taken refuge under a tree along in 2nd mile.

Poshyer village gets cut off from Kalimpong and other places every time there is heavy rain.

Kalimpong GTA official Kazim Tshering Bhutia said he had arranged some essentials for the villagers and visited the area along with 'Save the Hills' Convenor Prabhulla Rao to take stock of the situation.

Rao said the village is threatened by the rising Teesta in the south and landslide from the north.
