3 HCs to get 11 new judges next week

While Madras High Court will get six new judges, three names have been cleared for Chhattisgarh HC and two for Punjab and Haryana High Court.

With President Pranab Mukherjee clearing 11 names recommended by the Supreme Court collegium, three high courts (HC) in the country will see an increase in the number of judges as early as next week.

The warrants of appointment are expected to be issued early next week.

While Madras High Court will get six new judges, three names have been cleared for Chhattisgarh HC and two for Punjab and Haryana High Court.

District and Sessions Judges SK Gupta, RP Sharma and AS Chandel have been cleared for elevation to the bench of the Chhattisgarh High Court. The three new judges will give a much needed boost to the high court where half of the seats out of the sanctioned strength of 26 are lying vacant.

Madras High Court will see high profile names like Additional Solicitor General GR Swaminathan, senior special prosecutor M Dhandapani along with V Bhavani Subbarayan will be elevated, as judges. Joining them are - Abdul Qudhoose, a second-generation judge, former additional public prosecutor Jagadish Chandra and PD Audikesavaly. The six new judges at the Madras High Court will bring up the working strength to 54 against the sanctioned 75.

Incidentally, these six names were among the 44 names that were cleared by the government after initially returning their names to the SC collegium for reconsideration.

Two district and sessions judges from Punjab will be elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court bringing its working strength to 48 against the sanctioned 85. Earlier this year, the SC collegium had asked the Law Ministry to process the names of two district and sessions judges of Punjab, who were party to a petition in the apex court concerning their seniority and which was decided in their favour sometime ago.
