Darshak Lodhiya, 23, from Mithapur in Junagadh, became the top CAT scorer in Gujarat, with an overall percentile of 99.97, and a sectional 100 percentile in the quantitative section. He had applied for the Common Admission Test (CAT) – a gateway to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) – in 2017 too, but his vernacular language-based educational background proved a hindrance. Three students from Gujarat, from a vernacular-medium background, scored over 99 percentile.

Overall, 11 male candidates achieved a perfect score in CAT 2018, all of them from engineering or technology background. As per the official statement shared by IIM-Calcutta, which conducted the test on November 25, seven candidates are from different Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and two candidates come from West Bengal's Jadavpur University. "While seven candidates are from Maharashtra," says CAT 2018 convenor Professor Sumanta Basu, "two come from West Bengal, and one each from Karnataka and Bihar. A total of 21 candidates from across the country have scored an overall 99.99 percentile, of which 19 have an engineering or technology background."

"This year's results are shocking," says a professor from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, "All the perfect scorers are men, which raises a question about inclusivity. Another important thing to note is that all the candidates come from an engineering or technology background, which again raises the question of diversity. I hope all the IIMs redesign their admission criteria this year and focus on diversity and endeavour to increase gender ratio."

CAT was conducted in two shifts on November 25. 2,09,405 candidates appeared for the exam, which was conducted in test centres spread across 147 cities. A record number of candidates appeared for CAT.
