22 passenger trains cancelled as Cyclone Phethai to hit Andhra Pradesh today

The Indian Railways on Monday cancelled at least 22 trains as the Meteorological (MeT) department has warned that the cyclone Phethai will intensify and move towards the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Railways on Monday cancelled at least 22 trains as the Meteorological (MeT) department has warned that the cyclone Phethai will intensify and move towards the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Some trains have also been rescheduled while some have been partially cancelled.

"Cyclone Phethai over West Central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved northwards in past 6 hours and lay centred at 05:30 hrs IST of 17th December over West Central Bay of Bengal, 320 km east-northeast of Chennai, 160 km southeast of Machilipatnam and 190 km south of Kakinada," said IMD.

The India Meteorological Department also said that It's very likely to move nearly northwards and cross Andhra coast around Kakinada today afternoon. However, due to unfavourable environmental conditions, it's likely to weaken before landfall  cross the coast as the cyclonic storm

The Department informed that Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada and Kalahandi district would experience heavy rainfall on Sunday. While on Monday, heavy rainfall is expected in various districts including Kalahandi, Malkangiri. Koraput, Rayagada, Nawarangpur.

A warning of heavy rainfall over isolated areas in coastal Andhra, north Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Jharkhand, south Chhattisgarh, and the Gangetic West Bengal, as well as strong wind warnings for south Andhra, north Tamil Nadu, and coastal Puducherry, were also issued.

The IMD has predicted damage to thatched huts, minor damage to power and communication lines due to breaking of branches, major damage to Kutcha and damage to Pucca roads, uprooting of small trees and some damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards, apart from sea water inundation in low lying areas after erosion of Kutcha embankments.
