Diwali came early for dozens of villagers in Kanawani Pustapur village near Ghaziabad, after their nearly three-week-long ordeal ended with the restoration of power supply. The nearly 2,400 families in the village, who had been without electricity since 20 days, finally breathed a sigh of relief on Friday evening.

They expressed joy and said their struggle of having to knock on the doors of the administration finally came to an end.

“Electricity was restored in the aftrernoon. We won’t need to travel a mile to buy water, and can sleep peacefully under fans at night,” said Neeraj Kumar, a resident of the area.

Sharmila Chadha and her children can also sleep in peace from Friday onwards. She won’t have to place a wet towel on her children, or spend energy in waving a hand fan for the benefit of her family members.

One of Chadha’s children, Soniya, is a Class X student, who was forced to skip school because of the situation in the village. She said she is looking forward to resuming her classes.

“Since the power cut, I couldn’t go to school. I couldn’t study properly under candle light. I have my board exams coming up next year, and have already missed many classes, but I’ll try and cope with academics in the time I have left,” Soniya said.

On Thursday evening, the Ghaziabad administration had installed two new transformers of 100 kv each, and by Friday afternoon, electricity supply was restored, said a senior official in Ghaziabad administration.

However, some residents claimed that the village still requires two more transformers in order to ensure there isn’t an overload again.

On August 25, all four transformers in the village were burned down because of overloading. The villagers complain that the power supplied to the transformer is inadequate to sustain the needs of the entire area.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had declared Ghaziabad as a ‘no power cut zone’ but the officers of Pashimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited) paid no heed to their complaints for several days.

While the administration had claimed that the electricity was restored on Wednesday, a spot visit made by DNA on Thursday revealed that there was no power in the village. The authorities were only carrying out the digging work.

Kanawani Pustapur lies on the flood-plain area of the Hindon River. Earlier, the village was registered under the land revenue records of district Gautam Buddh Nagar but a few years ago it was included in the Ghaziabad district.

Kailashu Devi (65), a resident, who moved there in 2016 said nothing has improved. The villagers also depend on electric pumps for water. For the past 20 days, the villagers have been running from pillar to post to get heavy duty transformers.
