The Bihar Police has seized 20 AK-47 rifles and several of its parts and attachments in the last one month from Mirzapur Bardah in Munger district, and with the racket expanding after every confiscation, it is now considering handing over the probe to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

What's intriguing, cops say, is that none of the seized rifles are locally made in Munger, which is a known hub of illegal gun factories, and all are in seemingly good condition, making it difficult to comprehend how they were procured by small-time smugglers in the state. "Seeing the extent of the arms-deal racket — Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, we have decided to hand over the case to the NIA," said a senior Bihar Police official."Forensic tests are underway and we are in the process of ascertaining if the seized rifles are from the Ordnance Depot in Jabalpur. Every house in the village is being searched and six persons have been arrested in connection with the case so far. Raids are on to nab those absconding," he added.

Munger superintendent of police Babu Ram said, "We were told that about 60-70 rifles had been smuggled in the last 4-5 years, following which the search operations commenced."

The first seizure was made on August 29, while subsequent seizures took place in multiple separate incidents. Those arrested have been booked under sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Arms Act among others," a source said.

The local police believe that Rahman, a former Army man, is the kingpin of the racket, while names of some politicians and musclemen as their buyers have also come up in the probe. Related arrests in connection with the probe have also been made in Madhya Pradesh.

At least three murders in Bihar in the last one month, including that of former Muzaffarpur mayor Samir Kumar, was effected using an AK-47 rifle.
