Two soldiers and two infiltrators were killed in three different incidents on the Line of Control (LoC), even as the authorities rescued more than 217 students and 15 teachers, who were trapped in three schools after the Pakistani Army shelled civilian areas in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

The Indian Army foiled a major infiltration bid when they killed two militants who were trying to sneak into Kashmir from the LoC in the Gurez sector of north Kashmir.

The incident occurred when Army troops manning the LoC noticed suspicious movement. Troops immediately challenged the militants, who opened heavy fire, which was immediately retaliated. "Two terrorists were later killed (in the operation)," said Colonel Rajesh Kalia, a defence spokesman at Srinagar.

Hours later, an Army jawan was killed when Pakistani Army snipers fired at him on the LoC in Naugam sector. "There was a ceasefire violation in Naugam sector. One soldier has been martyred," said Col Kalia.

Another soldier was killed when Pakistan resorted to unprovoked shelling on Indian positions in Naushera sector of the LoC. "The Pakistani Army initiated unprovoked firing on Indian Army posts in Naushera sector around 1.50 pm. The Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively. In the exchange of fire, Sepoy Jaspreet Singh was grievously injured and later succumbed," said defence spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Manish Mehta at Jammu.

Meanwhile, the police and district administration, in a daring operation, rescued more than 217 students and around 15 teachers from three schools after Pakistan resorted to heavy mortar shelling in Nowshera sector. Five bulletproof vehicles and three buses were pressed into service for the rescue mission.

"The students of three schools were trapped for more than six hours. After prolonged rescue operation 150 students at Government High School Bhawani were shifted to Nowshera. Likewise 55 students and teachers of Government High School Sair were rescued amid heavy shelling. Sair school was badly damaged due to shelling. Twelve trapped students were evacuated from Middle School Kaladi," said Dr Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary, deputy commissioner, Rajouri.
