Two Indian soldiers and a Pakistani intruder were killed on Thursday when the Army foiled a major Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) attack on its patrol on the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector, even as the security forces eliminated three top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists, including its `chief political assassin', at Kakpora village in South Kashmir's Pulwama district.

The slain soldiers have been identified as Naik Jadhav Sandip Sarjerao and Sepoy Mane Savan Balku. Naik Jadhav Sandip Sarjerao hailed from Aurangabad in Maharashtra and is survived by wife Ujala. Sepoy Mane Savan Balku hailed from Kolhapur, Maharashtra and is survived by his mother.

Pakistan BAT team violated the sanctity of the LoC at around 2 pm when it entered 600 metres inside the Indian territory and attacked the area domination patrol of the Indian army leaving two soldiers dead in the Poonch sector. Unlike in the past, this time there was no mutilation of the Indian soldiers by the Pakistan BAT team.

The patrol immediately swung into action and retaliated leaving one of the intruders dead and another injured. "Our Area Domination Patrol was targeted by the armed intruders and exchange of fire occurred. While the fire fight was going on, Pakistani posts engaged our posts by heavy firing. Our patrol killed one armed intruder. Body of one armed intruder is within visual reach. Another armed intruder was injured and covering fire by Pakistan posts facilitated his extrication", said an army spokesman.

BAT is a mix of Pakistani Special Forces and jihadis who are used as the force multiplier by the Pakistan army on the LoC.

Pakistan's BAT team was 600 metres within Indian side of LoC and 200 metres from their own posts when they carried out the attack on the army patrol.

This is the second BAT that has been foiled in the last one month on the LoC. Indian army averted a major tragedy on May 26 when they foiled Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) attack on its patrol and killed two militants on the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of North Kashmir's Baramulla district.

This is also the third BAT attack in the Poonch sector this year. On May 1 Pakistan army's BAT badly mutilated the bodies of two soldiers -- head constable Prem Sagar of Border Security Force and Naib Subaidar Paramjit Singh of the army on of the Line of Control (LoC) at Krishna Ghati sub-sector of Poonch district in Jammu division.

The BAT attack was foiled on the day when Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tioba (LeT) suffered a major setback when security forces killed three top militants including its `chief political assassin', Majid Hamid Mir dreaded for killing pro-India politicians, in an overnight operation at Kakpora village in South Kashmir's Pulwama district.

A `chronic stone pelter' nicknamed Chota Geelani, who was jailed thrice under Public Safety Act (PSA) was killed and 40 others were injured after security forces fired pellets and bullets at the stone pelting mob protesting against the killing of militants.

Police said acting on specific input, police along with 50 Rashtriya Riffles and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the Bank Mohalla Kakapora on Wednesday evening. When security forces were busy in search operation, militants hiding in the house fired at the security forces, resulting in the injury to army officer.

"The fire was retaliated and in the ensuing an encounter three LeT militants were killed. They have been identified as Majid Hameed Mir, Shakir Ahmad Jugjoo and Irshad Ahmad Dar. Two AK rifles and one Pistol was recovered from the encounter site", said a police spokesman.

In fact Majid Hamid Mir was considered as `chief assassin' of the LeT given his record of killing the pro-India politicians in the area. Police said Majid was involved in the killings of ruling PDP district president Abdul Gani, Janta Dal (U) district president Ajaz Ahmad, and two sarpanchs and bank robberies.
