Even before the wounds of Udhampur could heal, Pakistan again tried to push in militants into the Kashmir valley from across the line of control (LoC) in Tangdhar and Keran sectors in the last 24 hours. Alert Indian army troops foiled both the infiltration attempts but lost a soldier. Two others sustained injuries. Two infiltrators were also gunned down by the troops in the ensuing encounter.

The first infiltration bid was foiled on Saturday in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district of North Kashmir. Troops noticed a suspicious movement along the LoC and laid an ambush. As militants were trying to sneak in, they were challenged. The infiltrators opened indiscriminate firing.

"There is status quo at Tangdhar. Infiltration bid was foiled on Saturday. Contact was established. Since morning it is very foggy and forest being dense and progress is slow. We have lost one soldier and two have got minor injuries. The injuries are not so prominent," Colonel NN Joshi, defence spokesman at Srinagar, told dna.

This is the second major infiltration attempt to have been foiled in Tanghdar sector since July 23. Two militants were killed when army troops thwarted the militants' attempt to infiltrate in Tangdhar sector on the night of July 22 and 23. An army officer and a soldier were injured in the incident

On Saturday night, Indian army foiled another infiltration bid in Keran sector of Kupwara district when they killed two militants who tried to enter into Kashmir. Alert troops noticed suspicious movements of the militants trying to sneak into this side of Kashmir. There was a gunfight in which two ultras were gunned down.

"There was infiltration bid in the night. Two terrorists were killed. There was no casualties on our side," said Col Joshi.

Official figures reveal that around 97 militants infiltrated in 2013 followed by 65 in 2014 into Jammu and Kashmir. Around 100 militants had been neutralized along LoC and the hinterland in 2013. Over 150 militants were killed in 2014 and 40 militants till July 20 this year.

Figures reveal that this year there have been eight to 10 infiltration bids so far. However the security forces say in the next three-four months there may be an increase in infiltration attempts. Intelligence estimates reveal that around 250 to -300 infiltrators were waiting across the LoC to sneak into the Valley and 150 others are waiting to cross from the other side Pir Panjal into the Jammu region.
