Two first-time Congress MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly have decided to give up their salaries for social work. Congress MLA from Dhoraji Lalit Vasoya and Rajula MLA Amrish Der are the legislators who are setting an example.

Vasoya, who had announced during his election campaign that he would forgo his salary and utilise the same to help poor students in his area, was merely reiterating his promise. Vasoya also said he would acquire a plot of government land in Gandhinagar for a shelter home.

"I had decided even before filing the nomination that I will give up my salary for needy students.

I will set up a committee comprising elderly non-political personalities from my area who wish to volunteer for the good work I have planned. I will give my salary to this committee which will decide how to utilise the money," Vasoya noted.

"I will donate the plot in Gandhinagar to this committee and construct a shelter home on it. Anyone from my constituency who has to visit Gandhinagar to give exams or interviews or for studies or medical treatment can stay at the shelter home without paying a single penny. I wish other MLAs would also do this (dedicate their salaries), though it an individual choice," Vasoya added.

For Der, the decision to give up his salary for a cause was spontaneous. An industrialist who hails from a financially comfortable family, Der announced his decision after getting inspired by Vasoya. Der had been active in social work before taking leap into mainstream politics.

Vasoya is a former colleague of Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and was a coordinator for Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS). He resigned from PAAS after bagging a Congress ticket. Vasoya defeated senior BJP leader and former MP Haribhai Patel in the recent Assembly polls.
