17% MPs in Rajya Sabha have criminal record

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysis of affidavits of MPs of Rajya Sabha, has revealed that 17% (38) MPs out of 227 analysed have declared criminal cases against them, while 67% MPs (163) are multi-millionaires. The analysis further revealed that 15 MPs have serious criminal cases against them with Prof SP Singh Baghel of BSP from Uttar Pradesh, Parvej Hashmi of Indian National Congress from Delhi and Thiru T Rathinavel of AIADMK from Tamil Nadu are among the top three MPs with serious criminal charges.

A total of 84% (190) out of 227 MPs analysed are graduates or with higher educational qualification. About 5% (12) MPs have qualifications equivalent to 10th or below. Besides, out of the 227 there are only 20 women MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The verage assets of the 227 Rajya Sabha MPs analysed are Rs20.17 crore.
