Newly-appointed union sports minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, on Friday, announced a benchmark decision to give stipend of Rs. 50,000 per month to 152 selected athletes.

This comes after the Olympic Task Force gave recommendations that the stipend be paid to the elite athletes who are preparing for Tokyo Olympics, Asian Games, or Commonwealth Games.

It is to be noted that the government has selected these players under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. This stipend will be payable with effect from September 1, 2017. It is given with a motive to support the players meet their pocket expenses while they prepare for the big games to come.

“We are happy to announce that the ministry of sports has considered an out of pocket allowance for 152 athletes, these are our top athletes. All the training expenses will be taken care of and all their training programs will be taken care of,” Rathore said while speaking to a news agency.

“This is just purely an out of pocket allowance so that whatever minor expenditures happen, they (athletes) have this money readily available to them. And they can focus on their training,” he added.

The central government is also preparing a training and competition exposure plan with the selected athletes.

“This is a very good step. I believe this will bring out good results. If top players are being given financial support, more medals are expected to come in.”
