Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has expedited the process of compiling the Dictionary of Martyrs -- Freedom Struggle (1857-1947). This five-volume dictionary has listed all those who sacrificed their lives for freedom between 1857 and 1947. The council and the ministry of culture working on the project plans to get the series released by prime minister Narendra Modi around August 15.
The project was started in 2009 during UPA tenure and was to be completed by 2012. However, a delay in the release of funds derailed the project midway. While three of the five volumes of the series are already out, ICHR is working to complete the next two volumes.
The Dictionary of Martyrs, Freedom Struggle (1857-1947) includes 15,000 martyrs who sacrificed their lives from the first was of Independence till 1947. Divided into geographical zones, the first volume covered martyrs from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. Volume II covers states including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Rajasthan. The third volume has about 1400 freedoms fighters from states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Sind. Volume IV and V will cover states of east India and South India.
In the first-of-its-kind compilation, the dictionary has mention of even those foot soldiers whose contribution so far has gone unrecognised. "Our teams of researchers have visited the remotest possible places to extract all possible details. In some cases even the families could be traced back, providing us with concrete details," said a professor of ICHR.
While the volumes of the book were released from time to time, neither the ministry nor the council has so far celebrated their release. The ICHR plans to complete the two volumes by the end of March. "The book will need three months in the press as well. Our deadline for the next two volumes in June," added the professor.
The ICHR wants to hand over the complete compilation to the ministry of culture by the end of June. "It is a beautiful project, which has not been celebrated so far. We plan to get it released by the prime minister around Independence Day celebration," said an officer from the ministry of culture.
