Bursting firecrackers outside the time limit set by the Supreme Court on Diwali on Tuesday landed over 150 people, including juveniles, in trouble with the police in Tamil Nadu.

Six people were arrested and released after they furnished personal bonds at Cheranmadevi in Tirunelveli district for violating the court order and bursting crackers. Over 150 people were booked in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Chennai, Villupuram, Virudhunagar and other parts of the state.

Tirupur police commissioner P Manoharan said that cases were booked against those who violated the SC order. “No arrests were made in Tirupur but cases were registered,” he said.

Police sources said that case were registered under the Indian Penal Code section 285 for negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter endangering human lives. Under the section, one could be sentenced for upto six months or fined and even both if proven guilty.

A Class VIII student, Manivel, 12, of Namakkal district died after suffering burns in a cracker blast. Two others were hospitalised with severe burns. Police sources said that more details are awaited.

Firecrackers were burst all throughout the day in Chennai and other parts of the state in traditional fervour despite the state government asking the public to adhere to the two-hour timing set by the Apex court.

On October 23, the Supreme Court passed an order on a PIL restricting bursting of crackers to two hours between 8 pm and 10 pm. But Tamil Nadu government moved court seeking to extend the time. However, the Apex court rejected the plea but allowed the state to fix its own two-hour slot. The state government has a fixed timing to burst crackers between 6 am and 7 am, and 7 pm and 8 pm during the festival.
