13 towns in Odisha record temp above 40 degrees Celsius

Gruelling heatwave persisted across Odisha today with Balangir remaining the hottest town in the state at 44.3 degrees Celsius, even as at least 13 places breached the 40-degree mark.

The state virtually remained a boiling pot as the mercury breached the 42 degrees Celsius mark at nine towns.

Sunstroke has claimed at least three lives in the state so far this summer with casualties reported from Bargarh, Angul and Balangir districts, the office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said.

The MeT office has forecast heatwave to continue in most parts of the state for the next few days despite thundershower in some areas tomorrow.

Closely following Balangir town, Angul recorded a maximum temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Sonepur (43.4), Titlagarh (43.2), Hirakud (42.9), Sambalpur (42.7), Jharsuguda (42.6), Bhawanipatna (42.5) and Malkangiri (42.2), the MeT office said.

Both Talcher town and Sundargarh recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius, while the mercury stood at 40.1 degrees Celsius at Keonjhargarh and 40 degrees Celsius at Phulbani, it said.

The maximum temperature in state capital Bhubaneswar stood at 36.8 degrees Celsius, while the mercury touched 36.5 degrees in Cuttack city, the MeT said.
