The more than 13 lakh strong Indian Army is headed to become a hundred per cent digitised force in the next one year.

In line with the Digital India Project, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, defence minister Manohar Parrikar will on Thursday inaugurated a special software system ARPAN -- Army Record Officers Process Automation -- at Army headquarters.

Developed by the Army's Directorate General of Information Systems (DGIC) in association with the private firm Tech Mahindra, ARPAN will enable more than 12 lakh Army junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and jawans to access their service records and every employment details even as such details of force's 45,000-odd officers are already online.

Army sources said that under this digitalisation programme, every unit will have enhanced data capability enabled by high bandwidth connectivity. "Army has 45 record centres across country. We have already digitised records of seven of them and we are expecting that data related to every soldier will be brought online in next one year," a senior army officer told dna on condition of anonymity.

This will enable greater transparency, storage and faster retrieval of data. JCOs and jawans will be able to access their pay slip, basic employment information and service details.

Previously, such information lied with the Military Secretary branch at Army headquarters in New Delhi and those posted in far flung areas faced difficulties in contacting it. Now, every brigade will have Information kiosks where soldiers can see their details.

Prime minister had in October last while addressing the Combined Commanders' Conference urged Army to go for digitisation.
