In the wake of repeated incidents of sexual violence against women and school girls, Karnataka Home Minister K J George today said government will take steps to set up ten fast track courts to ensure speedy justice.

Speaking to reporters here, he said a request was made to the state high court in this regard and permission had already been obtained for setting up three fast track courts, of which two will be set up in Bengaluru and the other elsewhere.

Stating that it has been found that about 180 schools in the city were not following the prescribed guidelines, he said Police Commissioner has already issued notice to them. School managements not following the guidelines will have to face action under section 188 of IPC (relating to disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), he added.

After sexual assaults of minor girls in schools in the city, which triggered public outrage, Bengaluru police had recently come out with safety guidelines to be observed to ensure safety of children in educational institutions.

George said installing CCTV cameras in schools are not enough; control rooms also have to be setup to monitor the activities and a staff has to be appointed for this purpose. He also said schools have to do background check about the individual before appointing staff across different professional levels.

Four incidents of sexual assaults of minor girls in schools here in as many months had sparked public protests with the police facing anger for not doing enough to prevent such cases. The government also faced public ire for not being tough with the managements that flouted safety guidelines.
